The city of Bruges is an ancient one with a history stretching back to Roman times. It remained an important centre of commerce through the Dark Ages and into Medieval times. The name Bruges comes from the Norse "Bryggja" refelcting the close links the city had with the Norsemen during this period.

The long history and relative prosperity of the city mean that it has developed into one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, its historical centre has been designated as a World Heritage Site. Known as "The Venice of the North" there are numerous museums, churches, canals and historic locations that can be explored by foot, canal or horse drawn carriage.

Bruges also offers plenty of more down to earth pleasures. Within a short stroll there are superb markets, shopping, and there are also a vast number of excellent restaurants and bars in which to sample the famous Belgian beer and chocolate!
